Discounts can help you attract new customers, boost sales, clear inventory, and build loyalty—all while increasing visibility and encouraging repeat visits.

This article will show you the different types of discounts available and how to set them up on your point of sale. To see how to set up discounts on talech.com, see Create Discounts on talech.com.

Choosing the Right Discount for Your Customers

There are 5 types of discounts you can create:

  • % off entire order: Removes the given percentage to each product in the order.
  • $ off entire order: Removes a dollar amount from each product in the order equal to the total amount specified.  
  • $ off per item: Subtracts given dollar amount from each product in the order.
  • Fixed Price: Brings each product in the order to the fixed price amount. Does not apply to products with prices less than the fixed price amount.
  • Buy X Get Y: Apply a discount to products if other specified products are also purchased. You can set categories and number of products required to trigger this discount.

Then, you can apply those discounts in 3 distinct ways from your point of sale.

Line-item discounts: Stand-alone or one-off discounts applied to an order at checkout.

Discount buttons: Pre-set discount for your menu that can be added to an open order (lunch special, combo deals, 10% off, etc.).

Automatic discounts: Discount that is automatically applied to an order or product when certain criteria are met (happy hour, buy-one-get-one).

Line-Item Discounts

This is a discount on a single item, this is usually created as a stand-alone or one-off discount. Discounting this way does not create a button to be used again during another transaction.  

  1. In the register add an item to the order. 
  2. Tap on the item you wish to discount. 
  3. Select % or $ for the Discount Type.

  1. Enter a value in the Discount Value.
  2. Select Save

A discount has now been applied on this one specific item in this order.

Discount button

This creates a button in your register that can be added to an open order to apply the discount.

  1. Navigate to Back Office > Menu.
  2. Tap Discounts from the top.
  3. Tap the + button in the top right.
  4. Configure the discount as needed using the options available in the New Discount form outlined in the table below.
There are several ways to set up this button, here are the options you can choose from so your button can only be applied exactly how you want it to be.

NameProvide a name for the discount button as it appears in Register. 
Type
  • % off entire order
  • $ off entire order
  • $ off per item
  • Fixed price
  • Buy X get Y
Applied to tags If you have tags set up (learn more about that here: Category and Product Tags) you can have a discount that will only apply to the tagged items. 
ColorRefers to the color of the discount button on Register. 
Discount CodeUnique code attached to the discount. Useful with the search function on Register. 
Apply to Channel Select where to allow the discount to apply: In Store, Online or All (both). 
Apply to variable bundle constituents only Learn more about bundles and their constituents in this article Creating Product Bundles and Assemblies.
Require Admin Approval When enabled the discount cannot be applied without managers permission. 
Automatic Discount Automatically applies the discount to specific products based on criteria you set up (see detail in section below).

Automatic discount

This is a discount that is applied directly to products without the need for staff to apply the discounts to an open order. This discount will automatically apply when your order meets the criteria you have set up in your settings. This discount can be used for things such as a happy hour that only runs during a specific period or an exclusive offer that only runs on a specific day. 

  1. Follow the same steps to create a discount as outlined in the section above Discount button.
  2. Toggle Automatic Discount on.

How customers see your discounts

Your discounts will show on receipts, on any customer facing displays during a transaction or on your products on your online ordering menu.
