Tips for setting up your cash discount program

There are a few considerations when setting up a cash discount. How will you let your customers know that you offer a cash discount? Have you updated your prices to reflect the card processing price? Let’s explore your options to make the most of this feature.

Update your prices

Make sure your posted “on the shelf” prices reflect your card acceptance costs. You can also have dual pricing that includes the reduced cash discount price, but at a minimum ensure the posted prices include any card processing fees.

For example: If an item costs $10.00 and your processing fee is 4%, set the posted price as $10.42. Set your cash discount to 4% so that when paid with cash, the cost is $10.00.

Signage

Create some signage to inform your customers that you offer a cash discount, especially if you don’t have a customer facing display with your point-of-sale.

Chat icon.

Talk it up

Verbally inform your customers at checkout that a discount is available if they pay with cash. Make sure your employees know to mention it to customers during a transaction.

How a cash discount is applied to a transaction

Note: You can’t apply a cash discount to any of the following:
  • Transactions that include the sale of a gift card
  • Surcharging is activated
  • Partial or split payments
  • talech Mobile or talech Terminal

How the cash discount works and what your customers see will depend on your setup. If you have a talech Register with the customer facing display (CFD), the cash discount will display on the transaction details screen. If you don’t have a CFD, you’ll have to notify your customer about the cash discount (with signage or verbal reminders at checkout).

Qualified transaction

If the transaction qualifies for a cash discount (see notes section above), the cash discount is automatically applied and shown on the Register and customer facing display.

  1. At checkout, when cash is selected as the payment type, it automatically applies the discount to the products that qualify. On Register, a summary displays below the payment options showing the discounted amount.

If you have a talech Register with the customer facing display (CFD), your customer sees the cash discount amount in the transaction details.

Disqualified transaction

If the order includes disqualifying items, the summary text below the payments options tells you what disqualified the transaction from the discount. You’d have to remove the items or remedy the issues that are preventing the cash discount from applying for your customer to utilize it.
